The prospects for a close
game seemed remote. Dalai Llama's were top of the table
and on a run of five consecutive victories during which
they had scored 26 goals and conceded only two. dsw fc
were on the a similar run of three consecutive defeats
had no substitutes and had two players Mark Watts and
James Dow claiming injury before the game had even
started. To their credit they turned up, unlike Andy "I
left my kit at home" Dodd.
Despite the excellent
weather Mark still felt it appropriate not to turn up
until the kick off- literally! Mark's late arrival also
meant he missed the pre match preparations: let's keep
it tight, everybody in our half and hit them on the
counter.
The sophisticated strategy
worked! After 10 minutes neat football from Bob and
particularly Adam presented David with a straight
forward opportunity. 1 -0. The Llama's soon worked out
the game plan but they struggled to break dsw fc down;
their equaliser shortly before half time was a direct
result of dsw fc being stretched the full length of the
pitch (abandoning the startegy) leaving Paul exposed to
a shot from close range. Ok back to base plan. Let's sit
back.
dsw fc ran their socks
off: David and Adam tracking back (David only walking
once unnoticed into his own penalty area!); Bob and Mark
tackling and defending with great determination. dsw fc
broke occasionally and were deprived of their best
opportunity when the referee awarded dsw fc a free kick
after they were left 3 on 2...oh for the advantage rule.
Midway through the second
half the Llama's took the lead as James tackled thin air
- he was comfortably skinned and the lively Llama's
striker slotted cooly past Paul. dswfc were trailing 2 -
1. Plenty of effort followed, but not many chances to
either team.
A very close game against
the league leaders and some smart tactical thinking and
play by dsw fc bodes well for the last two fixtures for
this season and perhaps a good run in the cup
competition.
