Not since San
Marino took an early lead against England in the 1994
World Cup Qualifier have the bookmakers rubbed their
hands together with such glee as the depleted
Bayern
Awin took the lead much against the odds.
Reduced to 4 from the full compliment of 6
Bayern took advantage of
DSWs lack of match practice
and unique 0-0-5 formation.
It was
debutant Big Dave Dodd whose nerves got the better of
him as he dribbled the ball to the opposition who
promptly broke up the pitch and took the early lead. A
reassuring word from the elder Dodd and Big Dave never
looked back (literally!).
Thankfully the imposing Richards in goal identified the
weakness in the team formation and instructed players to
drop back into defence.
Neil ‘Pat’ James got DSW on level terms with a resilient
drive through the Bayern
defence and he slotted home with confidence. The nerves
settled, the DSW boys started
playing football. Passes invariably went astray and the
in form Richards held the game at evens. The second
goal came from Bob who quietly showed his cool and class
and left the keeper with no chance.
First substitution saw the double introduction of Dow
Snr. and
Jnr. A proud moment
reminiscent of Harry and Jamie at Southampton although
Dow Snr. defied his years
and put his boots on. With the Coach on the pitch the
passes started to click and Dow Jnr.
gave an added dimension of pace and control. Dow
Jnr. worked the defence hard
taking a sublime ball onto his chest at pace and testing
the keeper. It wasn’t long before he had set the DSW
record for the youngest scorer with a Van
Basten-esque volley, turning
to the crowd in controlled celebration!
Another lapse of concentration, this time from Dow
Snr. gave the ball away and
Bayern scored another
customary goal of break away and score unchallenged!!
Dow Snr. added a fourth
goal, dummying the keeper and slotting neatly into the
bottom right hand corner and Big Dave added a personal
brace before half time.
The second half was a more controlled affair with DSW
stroking the ball around well. Passes to feet and a
defiant back two of Dale and Pat meant
Bayern were shut out and
most of the play took place in the
Bayern half. Pricey missed a hatful, although
some fine goalkeeping meant he looked worse than he
possibly was, but chances were coming thick and fast.
Big Dave showed Pricey the way and added a couple more
before ‘show-boating’ got the better of him and his
scoring was done for the day. Pricey responded to the
taunts of ‘Baros’ and
finally got on the score sheet with a firm, low drive to
the keeper’s right.
Dow Snr. got his second
after a carefully worked move, volleying in from the
edge of the box. Some protests from the
Bayern defence were waved
away by the referee who didn’t want to deny DSW the
magic ‘10’. Dow Snr. spent
the evening in dreamland thinking of many more goals
that he might have scored but it was just the two for
tonight – the match ball going to Big Dave.
All in all a good performance; Admittedly 6 v 4 but a
win is a win and DSW are on their way back up the table.
