Match Summary -
Night of shame |
A depressing end to
the season: a bad tempered match with two sending offs
and two bookings as DSW drew with Grappenhall whose
objectives seemed unrelated to playing football.
Grappenhall fielded
an under strength team of 5 which DSW quickly exploited.
Mark Watts putting DSW 1 -0 ahead after 87 seconds with
a smart left foot shot into the corner following good
build up play involving David Dodd and Neal James.
DSW played well using
the extra man - but with little urgency. The game
erupted after 10 minutes with Grappenhall players
pushing the lively Adam following some strong tackling.
The first booking followed to Grappenhall who changed
their game plan to a straight forward policy of
physical intimidation. The free kicks steadily followed
and DSW moved to a three goal lead with well taken goals
from David Dodd and Neal James.
Inexplicably in the
second half the wheels came off a long punt upfield
allowed Grappenhall to get a goal back and five minutes
later the trick was repeated bringing the score back to
3 -2.
One of the
Grappenhall players deliberately handled the ball and
only the intervention of Mark Watts prevented him bring
sent off - decision both Marl and DSW later
regretted. Within minutes Mark felt the benefit of the
close marking by Grappenhall, a sharp exchange followed
and Mark and the Grappenhall defender were both sent
off.
Then a casual cross
field pass from James Dow was intercepted and
Grappenhall sped away to level the scores. The match
then descended into further farce with Grappenhall
intent on either hoofing the ball as far as possible,
hoofing DSW players as far as possible or passing
repeatedly to their goal keeper. DSW kept their passing
game and despite shots from Richard, James, Adam, David
and Neal the winning goal never came. A further
Grappenhall player was booked and the final whistle
arrived to end an unpleasant match. Grappenhall were
clearly pleased with their point and DSW were pleased to
see the back of a poor team that had played with both
poor sporting ability and attitude.
A disappointing end
to the second season for DSW - at least there's still
the Cup to look forward to.
